Captain Ibrahim Traore, the 38-year-old military officer who took power in Burkina Faso through a 2022 coup, faces growing scrutiny despite his popularity beyond the country. Supporters portray him as a symbol of national sovereignty and resistance to foreign influence, while questions persist over restrictions on political activity, an ongoing security crisis and the delivery of his national renewal promises. In April, Traore told Burkinabe people to “forget democracy,” arguing the country was in a revolutionary period rather than a democratic phase.

His government has withdrawn French troops, strengthened ties with Russia and prioritised local industry and agriculture. It says it has increased investment in rice and maize production, promoted local manufacturing and processing, and expanded state participation in infrastructure and strategic economic sectors. The government has also expanded the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland, a civilian force supporting the army.

Armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and IS continue to threaten the country, according to security expert Mustafa Bature Sallama. More than two million people have been displaced and millions need humanitarian assistance, he said. Independent verification of official security claims is difficult because journalists, researchers and humanitarian organisations face limited access. Authorities dissolved political parties and suspended political activities in January, while an extended military transition has delayed a return to civilian rule.

More than 400 militants were killed in a military operation against armed groups in Burkina Faso, according to an army statement released on June 30. The clashes occurred in the Gayéri area of the Sirba region and in Solhan and Sebba of the Liptako region after coordinated attacks on several military positions last Tuesday. The army said the assaults were repelled with support from the air force.

The statement claimed that the attackers were armed groups supported by France, noting that the government had earlier announced the severance of diplomatic ties with France. During the counteroffensive, the army reported destroying over 250 motorcycles and seizing 353 weapons of various calibers, along with ammunition and communication equipment. Three soldiers were also killed in the operation.

The army added that operations are continuing to locate those who fled and to ensure the safety of civilians in the affected regions.

Burkina Faso announced on Friday that it has severed diplomatic relations with France, its former colonial ruler. The declaration was read on national television, stating that the government had decided to end diplomatic ties with Paris. The move marks a significant escalation in the country's distancing from Western powers since Captain Ibrahim Traoré took power following a coup in September 2022.

According to the statement, Burkina Faso accused France of acting against its national interests. Communication Minister Gilbert Ouédraogo said the environment necessary for relations based on mutual respect, trust, non-interference, and sovereignty no longer exists. He added that the decision followed a thorough review of relations with Paris.

Ouédraogo further accused France of pursuing neo-colonial ambitions and supporting terrorist groups that have destabilized Burkina Faso and the wider Sahel region. The announcement underscores the military government's increasingly confrontational stance toward France and Western influence in the region.
